The Custom House Maritime Museum has seen many changes throughout its history. First built in 1835, its primary purpose was to collect taxes on imported goods that were delivered to the port and to facilitate overseas trade. As the port became less used, the building wasn't needed for this purpose any longer, and it was used as a manufacturing building and later as a storage facility.
The hallmark of the Museum building is the vaulted ceilings and cantilevered staircases that were designed by architect Robert Mills. Today, the Museum's purpose is to protect, preserve, and communicate the maritime heritage of the
region.
