Rowley Homes for Sale

Prospective buyers considering Rowley homes for sale may be in for a pleasant surprise: Comfortably situated between the better-known towns of Newbury and Ipswich, tiny Rowley (population 6,000) boasts a commuter T stop, a noted wildlife sanctuary, and a public library known for offbeat, creative programming.

Incorporated in 1639, the town features many simple but stately colonial homes arrayed around its central square, known locally as the Common. Rowley real estate prices range from about $120,000 up to $775,000. Rowley homes for sale range in size between 460 and 7000 square feet.

Rowley residents pride themselves on a quiet, rural lifestyle that’s still well within reach of major population centers and attractions. The town is located seven miles south of Newburyport and just 28 miles northeast of Boston, which residents can access via the MBTA Commuter Rail’s Newburyport/Rockport Line. The Interstate 95 East Coast corridor crosses Rowley’s western end.

Highlighting Rowley’s social calendar is the annual chili cookoff to benefit the Rowley Public Library. The cookoff, held each September, has grown so popular that organizers recently moved the event outdoors to the Common to accommodate the crowd. The rest of the year, residents enjoy some of the best ribs in the region at American BBQ, a funky local culinary institution that has expanded to include a second restaurant in Beverly. For dessert there’s Winfrey’s, the family-owned, best-of-North-Shore chocolatier and fudgery that chose Rowley for its flagship store. Wine aficionados appreciate the tasting room and eclectic gift shop at Mill River Winery, an award-winning vintner specializing in blends from locally grown grapes.

Outdoor enthusiasts enjoy Rowley’s Rough Meadows Wildlife Sanctuary, known for its excellent hiking, biking, and birdwatching. Just a few miles away in Topsfield lies the Ipswich River Wildlife Sanctuary, Mass Audubon’s largest wildlife refuge.

On Sundays from early spring though late fall, Rowley hosts the giant outdoor Todd Farm Flea Market, which attracts hundreds of vendors and antiques sellers each week.

Rowley is part of the Triton Public School District, which also draws students from the neighboring communities of Newbury and Salisbury. Pine Grove School (PreK-8) lies within walking distance of the Rowley’s main commercial area. The well-regarded Clark School, an independent private school founded in 1978, relocated from Danvers to Rowley in 2014.
