Metzy’s Cantina Officially Opens

Metzy's Cantina, Newburyport MA

Metzy’s Cantina has officially expanded to be a full service restaurant at the Newburyport Train Station and Rail Trail, offering its flavorful taco and burrito menu and bar selection, along with an expanded menu. The long-awaited restaurant, Metzy’s Cantina, will operate as the home base for Metzy’s Taqueria, its award-winning food truck.  This new set-up will allow Metzy’s to expand mobile dining service throughout the region and catering private parties, while extending the popular menu to a family-friendly dining experience that is convenient for commuters and those exploring the Rail Trail.

“The Cantina will be a vibrant eatery for commuters, local employees of the Industrial Park, and families throughout Greater Newburyport and Cape Ann,” said Erik Metzdorf, owner of Metzy’s Cantina.  “We will have designated seating and free parking for our restaurant patrons, and our delicious recipes and expanded menu items will be available throughout the day.”

Metzdorf continued, “We have a veteran staff that will make this an exciting opening, including our Head Chef Brad DeLibero, many who have been part of the Metzy’s family since the truck first opened its window for business. The Metzy’s Cantina team has been our lifeblood throughout this growing process, and I am incredibly grateful for their hard work and also the support of the greater Newburyport community.”

Campernel Design, Metzy’s design partner, has worked to create a space where the roots of the truck are experienced at the Cantina while ordering.  Arriving at the station, patrons will be able to look through the “truck window” within the Cantina and see their food being prepared.    Like the truck, orders are placed by the staff anywhere in the Cantina, utilizing bluetooth enabled wireless registers.  This wireless system allows for the chef and line cooks and bartenders to quickly prepare food and drinks via table-side and fired order tickets, keeping Metzy’s commitment of fresh food fast for its customers.

Seating and a custom built bar are available for patrons, with additional outdoor seating coming during warmer weather months. Corn Hole and other games will continue to be a feature, providing a fun dining experience for families.  Online ordering, take-out and deliveries are also available for convenience. Doors will be open on August 12th to welcome loyal patrons and culinary curiosity seekers at the new Cantina, located at 25 Boston Way, Newburyport, Massachusetts.

Metzy's Taqueria, Newburyport MA

As one of the area’s premier mobile restaurants, Metzy’s  Taqueria has found a way to dig deeper and make a strong food hold in the Greater Newburyport coastal community.  With solid patron backing and many local businesses enlisted to make a dream a reality, Metzy’s Cantina will open by July at Newburyport’s MBTA Train Station platform to expand this eatery’s hours to breakfast, lunch and dinner.  And did we say Happy Hour too?  Very happy on all fronts.  And a Happy Birthday is in order this week, as Metzy’s Taqueria Turns Two on Friday, May 20th.

So how is it that a mobile restaurant has grown to a brick and mortar establishment so quickly?  Owner Erik Metzdorf shares:

  1. Know your patrons. Take time to make it a fun and meaningful experience.  Are the menu items compelling?  Is it a delicious meal that visitors will rave about?  Is the location selfie-worthy?  Let your visitors spread the word about the brand experience.
  2. Control your costs. To meet growing demand, it became evident after 6 months that a commercial kitchen needed to be secured.  It made smart business sense to also double this as a restaurant and cantina with expanded hours of operation.  The added benefit was finding a location that has daily volume of foot traffic and minimal competition.
  3. Work towards a plan. Metzy’s 2016 Business Plan took a third place win at the Enterprise Center at Salem State University’s competition, earning dollars and bragging rights with no other restaurants in the Top Ten finalists.  Develop short term AND long term goals with a plan to implement, that you commit to and make decisions by – to keep you on your path to success.
  4. Let opportunities unfold. The idea of a food truck is a relatively novel idea in New England and gaining popularity, following mobile restaurant success in the southwestern states.  Realizing a viable expansion opportunity came later, in tandem with finding a commercial kitchen, as demand and special requests came from all over New England.

Metzdorf worked tirelessly to bring the city and state’s MBTA Newburyport platform and building back to a place that will welcome patrons with a meaningful dining experience.  “Metzy’s is known for our delicious food and unique, flavorful recipes – always delivering fresh food fast.  This experience will translate into the new venue by keeping to our roots at the cantina.”  Customers will still order at the “window” at the new venue, as they’ve designed elements of the truck to be present inside the cantina for an added playful experience.  Sure to be a selfie hotspot.

So as Metzy’s Taqueria TURNS TWO they seek more help.  Do you enjoy hosting and serving folks?  Or are you a master in the world of culinary arts?  Do you love all things food related?  And enjoy good vibes and music and culture in a productive atmosphere?  Then they want to speak to you!  Email Metzy’s general manager at to start the conversation and join the Metzy’s team!

Two Newburyport Holiday Parties

w/ VIPs Fifty Water Restaurant + Ceia Kitchen & Bar

My Newburyport Night on the Town

@KathrynCartini | Peacock Media

Water - Charity - Bob Veek + Chris Evans FINALTwo Newburyport VIPs hosted holiday parties on Thursday, neither of which I was going to miss, starting with Fifty Water Restaurant & Bar’s Charity Benefit.

Fifty Water owners Robert Veek and John Moore raised over $4000 for The Pettengill House to help children and families in need.

On hand to lend his support was Veek’s cousin Chris Evans, actor in Captain America and Fantastic Four.

Prior to the charity event, kids lined up for hours to get an autograph and picture taken with Captain America.

The excitement lead into the night with hundreds of people gathered for great food, drink and music by the Red Tail Hawk band.

I was able to speak with both Veek and Moore that night. Fifty Water will definitely be doing something special for New Years Eve. There are also many other exciting things in the works for the trendy Newburyport restaurant in 2015. Stay tuned for the latest.

Next it was off to Ceia Kitchen and Bar to celebrate the restaurant’s fourth anniversary.

Entering on State I was immediately greeted by Newburyport Celebrity Bartender Bret laughing it up with his fans, I mean patrons.

Up the stairs to the second floor and there’s Ceia owner Nancy Baptista-Caswell expediting. Fresh pasta dishes had just been brought to the window. The pasta was cooked perfectly and full of colorful flavors. I submitted it to @BestFoodBoston #BostonFab5. It’s my thing.

Onto the third level, there was a beautiful crowd of people enjoying champagne and more tasty food, including a table of Mediterranean olives and cheeses.

As if the night couldn’t have been more delicious in spirit, conversation and food, on the way out Nancy insists I indulge in a Buttermilk Donut. Oh, alright!

Not bad for a Thursday.
