Senior Activities Through the Council on Aging
Programming & Essential Services for Seniors
Connecting the Senior Community
The Newburyport Council on Aging is an incredible resource for the city’s older population, offering a variety of senior activities and services ranging from health and fitness to cultural and social needs. The goal of this non-profit organization is to encourage independence for Newburyport’s elderly while also improving their quality of life.
The Council on Aging’s programs and activities are tailored towards senior citizens but all ages are welcome to attend. Local seniors are encouraged to drop into as many as they would like, most do not require advanced registration. From fitness classes like Zumba to emotional support golden retrievers to a podiatry clinic or cancer support group, the Council on Aging always has a variety of senior activities to meet everyone’s needs. For the most current programs, visit the Council on Aging website and we recommend following the Friends of Newburyport Council on Aging Facebook page.
The Newburyport Council on Aging hosts many events in person at the Newburyport Community Senior Center, as well as offering virtual options. Many of these senior activities are free with some requiring a minimal fee for supplies.
For those hoping to attend in person, the Council on Aging also offers transportation. The COA vans are available to all senior residents of Newburyport, as well as to disabled residents of any age. Passengers may use the vans to travel to any local Newburyport destination, including the senior center. While the service is free, $2 ride donations are much appreciated. Call the Council on Aging office to request a ride at least 24 hours in advance; 978-462-0430.
Along with senior activities and events, the Newburyport Council on Aging also focuses on keeping the senior community healthy with nutrition programs and partnerships. Homebound seniors may request meal deliveries through Meals on Wheels by calling 978-868-1422. Seniors may also opt to pick up meals through the COA’s Grab and Go option each Wednesday. To reserve meals, call the Council on Aging at 978-462-0430 the Monday before. Along with prepared meals, the COA also partners with Our Neighbors’ Table to offer grocery pick up at the Senior Center. To schedule your pick up call 978-388-1907.
Looking for a rewarding way to give back to your community? Consider volunteering for the COA. The organization is always looking for people to help out with virtual and in-person senior activities, meal deliveries, transportation, and to make reassurance calls to the senior community.
