Malware can present itself in a variety of forms, such as a virus, a worm, or a Trojan horse. Hackers, intruders, and attackers use these techniques to make money off software flaws.

Identity Theft and Scams

Identity theft and scams are one of the more common cyberattacks. These methods used by cyber criminals can even victimize those who never use computers. There are several ways criminals can access your information, including overhearing a phone call, finding information in your trash, stealing your wallet, or picking up a receipt that contains personal information.

New Construction Meets Historic Homes of Newburyport

Historic Homes of Newburyport, new construction

At The Joppa Group, we have specialized custom craftsmen to usher Newburyport’s historic homes into the 21st century, combining a blend of interior new construction layouts and designs while protecting and preserving the historic facade and charm of our homes. Redesigning historic homes for today’s uses requires a complex and time tested process of careful planning and intelligent craftsmanship. Open concept layouts and vaulted ceilings are not what post and beam homes were designed for and often are not what they are even capable of structurally without significant repair.

It all starts with a vision of how the space will be used for today’s needs, recognizing limitations of the space and developing clever designs that often blend the character of a historic home into a modern layout.  Our process often demands that we quite literally build a new construction home inside the existing historic home. We do this in such a way, that if you were to remove the original historic structure there would still be a new home standing there. Our goal is always to maintain unique attributes of historic homes, especially if they add to the structural integrity such as chimneys or wooden support beams constructed from ships. Other features that clients frequently want to maintain are built-in china cabinets, fireplaces, elaborate ceiling moldings, mantles, and other class wood carvings.

As an experienced custom home builder, this is the level of care and attention we put into the basic framing. Our true passion comes to life when we wrap the kitchen in custom cabinetry and tile work worthy of a magazine cover.  Our vision transforms into reality everywhere as we layer in thousands of feet of custom trim work through bedrooms, hallways, living rooms, and mudrooms.  The final image is accented by custom lighting and splashes of texture. Whether it’s a bold doorknob made of glass or a glass door entering a custom built pantry, our spaces are meant to pull the dreams from inside your imagination and lay them out for the world to see and experience.

Blue Ribbon Water Purification Provides a Whole House Water Filtration Solution

Great Tasting, Healthy Water From Every Faucet in Your Home

If you’ve ever had a glass of water that just tasted really exceptional, there’s a good chance it came through a water purification and water filtration system. Local Newburyport company, Blue Ribbon Water, does just that—delivering healthy, great-tasting water to every faucet in your home. What makes their product truly stand out from an ordinary water purifier is that they install their system at the entry point of your home. This allows all of the water that flows into your house to be filtered—providing the purest H2o for drinking, bathing, laundry, and more.

So is it really important to install a water filtration system? As Blue Ribbon Water points out, municipal water facilities adhere to EPA requirements to keep your water microbe and bacteria-free and safe to drink—but safe does not necessarily equal healthy. Being a local Newburyport company, Blue Ribbon Water has spent ample time researching the area’s H2o to best understand the most common municipal water problems. Residents that install a water purification system with them will be given a filter selected to address the problems they discovered in their research—trihalomethanes, silt, sediment, chlorine, and other VOC’s. Blue Ribbon Water also continuously monitors the municipal water in the area and can adapt your water filtration system if new threats emerge.

While your health is obviously the greatest benefit of water purification, there are also many additional perks to having a system in your home. These include a longer life span for appliances and your water heater with reduced sediment buildup, more vibrant skin and hair, brighter laundry, and even healthier pets. You are also reducing your plastic consumption and helping the environment with bottled quality water flowing from your faucets, removing the need to purchase your drinking H2o.

Blue Ribbon Water makes the entire process of installing and maintaining a whole house water filtration easy. They literally do everything! Your quoted price includes local licensed plumbers that will come to your home to put in your system. Blue Ribbon Water will then maintain your filtration system by changing out your filters when needed. So all you have to do is kick back and pour yourself a nice clean glass of water and enjoy. Ready to install your new water filtration system? Contact Blue Ribbon Water today and you can be up and running in just a few weeks!

Blue Ribbon Water

By Bill Cooper , Newburyport.Com Correspondent
As President & Co-Founder of Blue Ribbon Water, Bill Cooper utilizes his extensive sales and marketing experience combined with strong knowledge of local municipal water challenges to create an environmentally conscious company that delivers whole house water filtration systems. Blue Ribbon Water’s focus is to deliver “Cleaner, Healthier, Great Tasting Water” (sm) throughout the entire home, restaurant, or business. The company was founded on three simple principles: 1) Be the expert on the water in each town we do business, so our solutions is the best possible. 2) Deliver superior full customer service including installation and scheduled filter changes. 3) Be honest and don’t sell customers what they don’t need. Other water filter companies, or plumbers who do water filters ‘on the side’, lack in all these areas. For instance, many residents are told they need an expensive water softener when they do not. City water rarely needs a water softener. Other companies leave it up to the customer to remember to have their filter changed. Blue Ribbon Water keeps a database of filter changes and automatically alerts the customer. Bill has lived in Newbury with his wife Debra for over 30 years. They raised their two boys here, and Bill was on the Newbury Finance Committee.

How to Prepare for Hydrant Flushing – Scheduling & Tips

Featured Video Play Icon

Hydrant flushing typically occurs twice a year—in the spring and fall. Newburyport is currently in the middle of hydrant flushing which started Monday, September 20th and is expected to run through the month of October. Why does the city do it? Hydrant flushing is beneficial for the city street water pipes and ensures the safe operation of hydrants. However, the process dislodges buildup in the street pipes that then travel to your home. It’s key to know when your street is being flushed so you can take the proper precautions to protect yourself and your home.

When your street is being flushed, your water turns brown, and particles can become lodged in shower heads and faucets and settle in the bottom of water heaters. If your street is currently flushing, you should avoid drinking water from your faucet—this includes water for your pets. Along with clogging water filters and temporarily contaminating your drinking water, hydrant flushing can also discolor clothing if the water is used to do laundry.

When it’s your streets turn to be flushed, I recommend that all of my Blue Ribbon Water customers change their water filter to bypass mode. If you have a water filter, all of that ‘muck’ will be filtered out, which is good. But filters have tiny, tiny pores that can become clogged as the water passes through it, lowering your water pressure and shortening the life of your filter. We alert all of our Blue Ribbon Water customers when it’s time to change their filter settings to preserve its longevity and to give our customers an advanced warning to plan around hydrant flushing schedules.

So how should you plan for hydrant flushing? The City of Newburyport recommends a few steps that apply to both those with and without a filter.

  • Keep your eye on the city website for what day your neighborhood is being flushed.
  • On that day, limit the use of water and delay doing laundry.
  • Avoid drinking water from a faucet.
  • Do not use hot water, as particles can settle in the bottom, and take longer to clear.
  • We recommend to our customers with filters to put it in ‘bypass’ mode, if available.
  • At the end of flushing, run an outside faucet, or utility sink until the water clears up.
  • Put your water filter back in operation mode.

Newburyport provides a list of streets every morning on their homepage. They do not publish streets in advance, so you do need to check every day.

Architectural Styles of Newburyport Meet Reimagined Interiors

Architectural Styles, Newburyport, MA

Architectural styles abound in Newburyport. As you drive down High Street you’ll see examples of Cape, Mission, Bungalow, Modern Farm House, Federalist, Mansard, Greek Rival, Mid-Century, Ranch, Colonial and many more. Each style represents a different part of history and design theory.

The diversity of architectural forms is what makes this town so interesting. From timeless to trendy, Newburyport’s charm is linked to the co-existence of architectural styles. Amidst the variety, big changes are afoot. You’ll see changes happening on the outside with new porticos, garage additions, modern window replacements and material/color updates. But even more is happening behind closed doors.

Long ago, rooms were smaller and heavily divided by function. It was common to have separate parlors, dining rooms, and serving quarters – Each space designed for a singular purpose. Today’s family craves more open and flexible living. To achieve this goal, the layout of the inside of a house needs to be reimagined yet still harmonize with the exterior architectural style. Thanks to technology, structural engineering and great architectural design, most homes can be dramatically transformed to better serve a modern lifestyle.

Over the last year, we’ve noticed a common theme in renovation requests. Home owners have consistently asked, “How can I…”

  • Open up the dining or living room space for better flow with the kitchen
  • Improve overall kitchen functionality – get a bigger island, more storage, open shelving
  • Blend indoor with outdoor living – get more windows, views, and light
  • Replace dated trim and molding detail with more modern, simple lines
  • Convert a tired, cluttered bathroom to a more refreshing, spa-like refuge

No matter what the architectural style of your exterior, there are endless possibilities for interior transformations. It’s fun to explore all your options. That’s why we’re fans of dreaming big and then designing across a spectrum of change, from mild to magnificent.

In most cases, the process starts by documenting the existing conditions. Using the latest 3D camera technology, we can capture hundreds of views of an existing floor plan and stitch together a “doll-house” visual model. All key dimensions are then imported into CAD to create a baseline for new designs.

From there the architectural styles are incorporated into multiple schematic designs are developed in both Floor Plan and Elevation views. Computer modeling allows us to depict the design dimensionally to bring it visually to life. Sometimes a single design rises to the surface as the winner. Other times, a mash-up of several designs becomes the new hybrid solution. The selected architectural plan is vetted for feasibility and submitted to contractors for initial bids. When done efficiently, the Schematic Design process can take less than 8 weeks.

Whether it’s an antique Sea Captain’s home, or a conventional ranch, interior home transformations can have a huge impact on day-to-day living without noticeable change to the exterior. Of course, the exterior can be transformed as well, but we’ll save that for another blog!

The result is a better use of space, increased flow, improved views, more storage, less clutter, cleaner lines, and more environmentally friendly materials… Not to mention increased home value in a rising market!

No matter what type of house you live in, there’s a way to adapt the floor plan, wall position, entry ways, staircases and any other structural or non-structural component to improve your lifestyle.  Having an architectural strategy and an architectural plan are the keys to unlocking your home’s true potential.

Want to see the possibilities? We’d be happy to show you how our experienced Newburyport architects can take your home to the next level.

5 Smart-Money Reasons to Buy an HVAC Maintenance Contract

Caswell HVAC Maintenance Contract, Newburyport

Do you regularly change the oil in your car? More than likely you do, because a poorly serviced engine runs less efficiently and can create serious – and costly – problems down the road. Heating and cooling (HVAC) systems in the home work much the same way: Service them regularly and you’ll maintain efficiency and even spot small problems before they develop into expensive emergency repairs. Here are five time- and money-saving reasons why Caswell recommends that homeowners purchase an annual HVAC Maintenance Contract.

  1. An HVAC Maintenance Contract can’t eliminate all issues, but preventative maintenance can help detect a mechanical problem before it turns into an emergency situation. Pay a service fee up-front to avoid a much larger future repair bill.
  2. Annual maintenance enables our technicians to develop a long-range view of your HVAC service system. A service technician that is familiar with your system is far more likely to spot a small problem and fix it before it turns into a major malfunction.
  3. When your heating system breaks in the dead of winter, who do you call? More importantly, who calls you back? Caswell customers with an HVAC Maintenance Contract get top priority in cases of a heating or cooling system malfunction.
  4. Annual servicing helps prolong the health and efficiency of your HVAC system, and that means lower monthly energy bills for you – a significant cost savings over time.
  5. Typically customers with an HVAC Maintenance Contract get top priority with service scheduling. In fact, Caswell will contact you with a reminder to schedule your next maintenance appointment.

No one wants to pay higher energy bills and deal with emergency repairs. With an HVAC Maintenance Contract from Caswell Mechanical, it’s far less likely that you’ll have to.

Providing Cool Air Conditioning Comfort to our Community!

Air Conditioning, Newburyport MA

Air Conditioning used to be a luxury, but modernized homeowners are more reliant on cooler drier air. Higher efficiency options allow for comfort with less operational costs as well as creative solutions for style and decor. Lombardi Oil & Gas has been installing and servicing air conditioning system for residential customers in Newburyport and the surrounding area for many years giving us the knowledge and experience to help customers understand that In addition to making everyday life more comfortable, air conditioning does much more for homeowners.

  • Air Conditioning continuously filters and circulates indoor air, removing airborne allergens, pet dander, pollen, pollutants and more. For those with respiratory conditions or sensitive allergies, HEPA filters and air purification systems work alongside cooling units to bring needed relief.
  • Air conditioning dehumidifies the air as it cools. This is important because humidity inhibits the ability of our bodies to self-regulate temperature, and it makes cooled indoor spaces feel clammy and smell musty.
  • Many modern air conditioning offers multiple fan settings, making it possible to filter and circulate indoor air even when the Air Conditioning isn’t actively cooling helping homeowners strike a balance between cleaner air quality and lower energy bills.
  • Smart Thermostats, the latest in thermostat technology, make it easier than ever to control energy use. These thermostats can be controlled from anywhere using your smartphone, and they provide the most user-friendly interface for setting up detailed cooling schedules that will save you money.
  • As an alternative to central air systems, DUCTLESS Air Conditioning & HEAT PUMP units are Great for older homes, renovated spaces and targeted cooling and heating needs – and can provide added value with savings up to 30% in heating costs.
    • Whisper Quiet
    • Quick & Easy Install
    • Year-round efficiency
    • Wi-Fi compatible
    • Wall, ceiling or floor mounted
    • Aggressive rebates available for new installations

Suggestions to keep your Air Conditioning system running at peak performance:

Keep your outdoor condenser free from leaves and brush. Sometimes you may want to hide the outdoor unit, however, please make sure to leave sufficient room around the whole unit, for proper air circulation on top and sides.

Change the filter regularly. Your air conditioner breathes through its filter, and when that filter becomes clogged, your AC unit struggles. A dirty filter can cause your fan to wear out prematurely and can sharply increase your energy use. Make a habit of replacing these on time!

Tune up your AC unit annually. Annual maintenance from a licensed technician is the only way to get your system ready for the cooling season. You’ll experience fewer breakdowns, lower energy bills and a longer life for your air conditioner.

Consider an Air Conditioning maintenance plan. The plan will cover an annual tune-up – and give you 15% off any parts and labor.

If you experience any disruptions in your cooling system, or have interested in upgrading to high efficiency or ductless, we are happy to help!

Customer satisfaction is important to us. Full-Service Florist, Greenhouse & Garden Center

Nunan’s Florist & Greenhouses
Throughout the Years

Nunan’s Florist, Greenhouse & Garden Center is located at 269 Central Street in Georgetown, Massachusetts. Nunan’s is the North Shore’s premier floral designer for weddings and events.  We also provide exemplary residential and corporate landscaping services, and interior plantscaping design/implementation. Regularly, Nunan’s offers a variety of classes on floral design and hosts seasonal events throughout the year, which are open to the public.

Albert D. Nunan started Nunan Florist & Greenhouses as a florist shop in Saugus, Massachusetts in 1917.  Later, he relocated to Georgetown, Massachusetts. After a long and successful career, Albert passed the business down to his son Ken, who owned and managed Nunan’s for many years. In 1985, Ken was ready to retire and found two people who were eager to purchase the business.

Steve Flynn Sr. was born and raised in Middleton with 7 other siblings. During the summers and after school Steve and most of his siblings worked at Middleton Greenhouses located right down the street from their family home. During his high school years Steve knew he wanted to have a career in the agricultural world. A few years later, having a family of his own and pouring all his time into his work, Steve wanted a business of his own. Bill Guerrini was the grower there and a best friend to Steve who also lived in Middleton. Bill had the same passion for the agricultural world as Steve and spent most of his days on site taking care of all the crops. The two together decided that purchasing a place of their own was the best decision for them and their families. So, after meeting with Ken Nunan, a deal was made, a partnership was formed and an old business took on a new life.

Respectfully keeping Ken’s family name on the business, Steve and Bill grew Nunan’s into a larger and more diversified business. Over the last 30 years, Steve and Bill turned Nunan’s into what is today a full service florist, greenhouse & garden center while incorporating landscaping, plant rentals and interior plantscaping into the business. Bill is semi-retired now but comes in several times a month to help with all the crops in the greenhouses. Steve’s sister Maureen followed Steve and Bill from the beginning and is the Manager of the Garden Center area where you can find all your indoor plants. Steve’s sister Maryanne is the Office Manager, his wife Christine works in the office, his son Stephen Jr. now has the role of Owner/General Manager and his other son Brody is a full time employee. Stephen Jr.’s son Jordan, now 3rd generation, is working full time on the property. Steve Sr.’s 3 daughters, his other siblings as well as grandchildren, nieces and nephews are always eager to lend a helpful hand during the busy spring, the holidays, or any special events when needed.

Next Generation, New Ideas

Stephen Jr. resides in Georgetown right next to Nunan’s. He has 4 children and has followed in his father’s footsteps. You will always see him on the property 7 days a week. Growing up in the family business Stephen Jr. has learned a great deal about the business, the agricultural industry and the need to stay diversified due to the slow seasons. Today we see and hear about Agritourism which involves any agriculturally based operation that brings visitors to a farm, such as the corn mazes and pick-your-own pumpkins. Going with this thought and doing a lot of research, Stephen Jr. proposed the idea of adding a mini golf course to the business and calling it Nunan’s Garden Golf. How does a mini golf course relate you might ask? Well, Nunan’s mini golf course is a very well designed garden atmosphere with no structures such as dinosaurs and windmills. It is a peaceful walk through beautiful gardens as you enjoy your game of mini golf. They planted their own greenhouse grown crops of annuals, perennials as well as nursery stock they carry yearly in their nursery. Many of the unique material is labeled so if you come across something you like, just flip over your score card and write down the plants you like on the “plant wish list” so you can return at your convenience and find them in their nursery or plant area.

If you have an appreciation for exceptional design, top quality products and friendly attentive service, a visit to Nunan’s Florist, Greenhouse & Garden Center is a must.

A Homeowner’s Guide to Home Renovation

Homeowner's Guide, Newburyport , Worthington Interior Design

A Homeowner’s Guide to Home Renovation is a restorative approach for all properties produced by Worthington Interior Design, a Newburyport based Interior Designer servicing customers on the North Shore MA, Boston and beyond. Before you begin renovating or remodeling your home, you’ll need to consider a few things. Today, Worthington Interior Design outlines common home renovation steps and project-types. Worthington offers tips and advice for your upcoming renovations.

Home Extensions/Additions

A Homeowner’s Guide to Home Renovation regarding setting up a realistic budget is an essential aspect of a home extension project.

Your addition or home extension must fall within your town’s ordinances and codes requirements. Knowing for instance your setback requirements will stipulate whether you can even possibly do an extension on your property. This requires doing your due diligence from what your city or town has online for your property as well as having a professional site plan.

The site plan is stamped and sealed by a professional Engineer and will give you all the information you need to compare it with your city/town ordinances. In addition, most likely will need a Structural Engineer to produce framing plans for your extension/addition.

If in fact you are approved to add your extension/addition you will need to have your homeowners insurances reviewed by your insurance agent making sure your project is covered.  One other key matter of business is to have your insurance agent review the chosen General Contractor’s insurances for risk assessments.

Having an Interior Designer and or Architect onboard to design your extension/addition produces stamped and sealed construction documents to obtain permits*. From there you bid or negotiate with a General Contractor for the project’s cost. Having your Interior Designer and Architect on board to assist with this aspect will save you time and money.  Once you select a General Contractor, he/she will obtain a building permit* to meet requirements and building guidelines.

From here the General Contractor and his/her subcontractors will perform all the work required. General Contractors meet with building inspectors to sign off on electrical, plumbing etc. The General Contractor will provide specialist contractors for demolition and erecting walls, pipe fitting, drainage, gas, heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) connections, electrical and internet wiring, tiling, and painting.

Adding an extension/addition is a perfect time to assess your home’s exterior. Have your roof checked for wear and tear and weather tightness. This goes for any other exterior portion of your home.

Upgrading your roof improves your property’s curb appeal, which adds value to your home. repaint, or Roofing renovation can also include working on the gutter system. Weather tight your entire home before you embark on interior renovations.

Basement Renovations

A Homeowner’s Guide to Home Renovation regarding Basement renovations.  If you are only going to do a basement renovation the General Contractor along with your Interior Designer will need to assess your basement to guide you to materials, you will need to select based on the condition of your basement. Do you have a sump pump, do you have light, what is the foundation wall made from and does it weep?  This will determine the next steps and if waterproofing is needed or any other particulars for designing a usable basement space. Some homeowners opt for suspended ceilings in the basement because of cost-efficiency after finishing the walls. As for Basement flooring, using a porcelain wood style flooring is viable option that addresses moisture and warping considerations.

Kitchen Remodeling

A Homeowner’s Guide to Home Renovation regarding Kitchen remodels will instantly add value to your home.  This is a worthwhile investment especially working with an Interior Designer to plan a more efficient use of your kitchen space. Once you have a desirable space plan tackle the appliances for upgrades or replacement and move onto your cabinets and base cabinets. If you need to replace it, go for it! Having Worthington Interior Design on board you will be assured of recouping all the monies spent on your kitchen remodel.

Another significant focal point in the kitchen is the countertop and backsplash. You can further improve your kitchen space by updating the kitchen floors, installing natural stone or porcelain tiles.

Smart Home Upgrades

A Homeowner’s Guide to Home Renovation regarding while undertaking a renovation, it’s the perfect time to consider smart home upgrades increase your home’s comfort, convenience, and energy efficiency. Consider installing programmable thermostats allowing you to control temperature settings remotely to optimize energy usage. Smart lighting solutions provide customizable ambience while saving energy.

Upgrading smart security systems with doorbell cameras or smart locks enhances your home’s safety. Additionally, smart home hubs integrate all these elements, offering multiple aspects of your home to be controlled from one device or app. Tech-savvy upgrades modernize your space but also add value to your home in the long run.

A Homeowner’s Guide to Home Renovation considering all the aspects above will help with planning your next home renovation and remodeling projects. From home extension/addition, basement renovation, kitchen remodel with the appropriate design team, contractors and a well-thought-out plan, your home is sure to increase in value!

Final Hines Way Townhomes Hit Market this Spring

Hines Way, Robert Bentley, Newburyport

Newburyport’s new development, Hines Way, stands out from many other projects in the port city with one-of-a-kind style and amenities. This well sought-after community, which has been built and sold in three phases so far, will bring the final phase of condos to market this spring. For buyers hoping to become part of the Hines Way neighborhood—phase 4 promises some of the development’s best properties yet with excellent locations and views.

What makes Hines Way stand out? The condos have a coastal craftsman style that is different from any of the competition. Each townhome has three bedrooms and 3 1/2 baths, along with the main floor set up to entertain with an open concept, high-end finishes, and a deck. The outdoor space continues with a private patio off the downstairs bonus room.

Along with beautiful interiors and private outdoor space, Hines Way continues to deliver with stunning outdoor common space. The condos line a beautiful street with expert landscaping, cobblestone walks, gorgeous granite walls, and even a pond. At the end of the street is a cul de sac featuring a flag pole with a soaring American flag, a nod to the street name itself. Hines way is named after First Lieutenant Derek Hines, a Newburyport native killed overseas while serving in Afghanistan. The flag is dedicated to Hines and his family as a thank you for his service.

While the amenities and attention to detail inside and out of the properties make these townhomes extremely desirable, what puts them over the top is the location. As all current and aspiring Newburyport residences know, location is key in this super walkable city. Hines Way gives residents access to Newburyport’s Clipper City Rail Trail—the perfect spot to enjoy a beautiful walk or bike ride and also a direct connection to downtown and the waterfront. For home buyers commuting to Boston, Hines Way is also a very quick walk or ride to the MBTA. Despite the walkability that Hines Way offers, having a car is also no problem for residences as each condo boasts a private oversized one-car garage—an extremely rare amenity in Newburyport.

With phase 4 of this project set to come to market soon, there is still one last opportunity to call Hines Way home—don’t miss out!  The Hines Way development is being exclusively handled by Bentley Real Estate. For more information or to schedule a tour, reach out to Robert Bentley at 781.858.5115.
