Blue Ribbon Water Purification Provides a Whole House Water Filtration Solution

Great Tasting, Healthy Water From Every Faucet in Your Home

If you’ve ever had a glass of water that just tasted really exceptional, there’s a good chance it came through a water purification and water filtration system. Local Newburyport company, Blue Ribbon Water, does just that—delivering healthy, great-tasting water to every faucet in your home. What makes their product truly stand out from an ordinary water purifier is that they install their system at the entry point of your home. This allows all of the water that flows into your house to be filtered—providing the purest H2o for drinking, bathing, laundry, and more.

So is it really important to install a water filtration system? As Blue Ribbon Water points out, municipal water facilities adhere to EPA requirements to keep your water microbe and bacteria-free and safe to drink—but safe does not necessarily equal healthy. Being a local Newburyport company, Blue Ribbon Water has spent ample time researching the area’s H2o to best understand the most common municipal water problems. Residents that install a water purification system with them will be given a filter selected to address the problems they discovered in their research—trihalomethanes, silt, sediment, chlorine, and other VOC’s. Blue Ribbon Water also continuously monitors the municipal water in the area and can adapt your water filtration system if new threats emerge.

While your health is obviously the greatest benefit of water purification, there are also many additional perks to having a system in your home. These include a longer life span for appliances and your water heater with reduced sediment buildup, more vibrant skin and hair, brighter laundry, and even healthier pets. You are also reducing your plastic consumption and helping the environment with bottled quality water flowing from your faucets, removing the need to purchase your drinking H2o.

Blue Ribbon Water makes the entire process of installing and maintaining a whole house water filtration easy. They literally do everything! Your quoted price includes local licensed plumbers that will come to your home to put in your system. Blue Ribbon Water will then maintain your filtration system by changing out your filters when needed. So all you have to do is kick back and pour yourself a nice clean glass of water and enjoy. Ready to install your new water filtration system? Contact Blue Ribbon Water today and you can be up and running in just a few weeks!

By Bill Cooper , Newburyport.Com Correspondent
As President & Co-Founder of Blue Ribbon Water, Bill Cooper utilizes his extensive sales and marketing experience combined with strong knowledge of local municipal water challenges to create an environmentally conscious company that delivers whole house water filtration systems. Blue Ribbon Water’s focus is to deliver “Cleaner, Healthier, Great Tasting Water” (sm) throughout the entire home, restaurant, or business. The company was founded on three simple principles: 1) Be the expert on the water in each town we do business, so our solutions is the best possible. 2) Deliver superior full customer service including installation and scheduled filter changes. 3) Be honest and don’t sell customers what they don’t need. Other water filter companies, or plumbers who do water filters ‘on the side’, lack in all these areas. For instance, many residents are told they need an expensive water softener when they do not. City water rarely needs a water softener. Other companies leave it up to the customer to remember to have their filter changed. Blue Ribbon Water keeps a database of filter changes and automatically alerts the customer. Bill has lived in Newbury with his wife Debra for over 30 years. They raised their two boys here, and Bill was on the Newbury Finance Committee.

How to Prepare for Hydrant Flushing – Scheduling & Tips

Featured Video Play Icon

Hydrant flushing typically occurs twice a year—in the spring and fall. Newburyport is currently in the middle of hydrant flushing which started Monday, September 20th and is expected to run through the month of October. Why does the city do it? Hydrant flushing is beneficial for the city street water pipes and ensures the safe operation of hydrants. However, the process dislodges buildup in the street pipes that then travel to your home. It’s key to know when your street is being flushed so you can take the proper precautions to protect yourself and your home.

When your street is being flushed, your water turns brown, and particles can become lodged in shower heads and faucets and settle in the bottom of water heaters. If your street is currently flushing, you should avoid drinking water from your faucet—this includes water for your pets. Along with clogging water filters and temporarily contaminating your drinking water, hydrant flushing can also discolor clothing if the water is used to do laundry.

When it’s your streets turn to be flushed, I recommend that all of my Blue Ribbon Water customers change their water filter to bypass mode. If you have a water filter, all of that ‘muck’ will be filtered out, which is good. But filters have tiny, tiny pores that can become clogged as the water passes through it, lowering your water pressure and shortening the life of your filter. We alert all of our Blue Ribbon Water customers when it’s time to change their filter settings to preserve its longevity and to give our customers an advanced warning to plan around hydrant flushing schedules.

So how should you plan for hydrant flushing? The City of Newburyport recommends a few steps that apply to both those with and without a filter.

  • Keep your eye on the city website for what day your neighborhood is being flushed.
  • On that day, limit the use of water and delay doing laundry.
  • Avoid drinking water from a faucet.
  • Do not use hot water, as particles can settle in the bottom, and take longer to clear.
  • We recommend to our customers with filters to put it in ‘bypass’ mode, if available.
  • At the end of flushing, run an outside faucet, or utility sink until the water clears up.
  • Put your water filter back in operation mode.

Newburyport provides a list of streets every morning on their homepage. They do not publish streets in advance, so you do need to check every day.

Architectural Styles of Newburyport Meet Reimagined Interiors

Architectural Styles, Newburyport, MA

Architectural styles abound in Newburyport. As you drive down High Street you’ll see examples of Cape, Mission, Bungalow, Modern Farm House, Federalist, Mansard, Greek Rival, Mid-Century, Ranch, Colonial and many more. Each style represents a different part of history and design theory.

The diversity of architectural forms is what makes this town so interesting. From timeless to trendy, Newburyport’s charm is linked to the co-existence of architectural styles. Amidst the variety, big changes are afoot. You’ll see changes happening on the outside with new porticos, garage additions, modern window replacements and material/color updates. But even more is happening behind closed doors.

Long ago, rooms were smaller and heavily divided by function. It was common to have separate parlors, dining rooms, and serving quarters – Each space designed for a singular purpose. Today’s family craves more open and flexible living. To achieve this goal, the layout of the inside of a house needs to be reimagined yet still harmonize with the exterior architectural style. Thanks to technology, structural engineering and great architectural design, most homes can be dramatically transformed to better serve a modern lifestyle.

Over the last year, we’ve noticed a common theme in renovation requests. Home owners have consistently asked, “How can I…”

  • Open up the dining or living room space for better flow with the kitchen
  • Improve overall kitchen functionality – get a bigger island, more storage, open shelving
  • Blend indoor with outdoor living – get more windows, views, and light
  • Replace dated trim and molding detail with more modern, simple lines
  • Convert a tired, cluttered bathroom to a more refreshing, spa-like refuge

No matter what the architectural style of your exterior, there are endless possibilities for interior transformations. It’s fun to explore all your options. That’s why we’re fans of dreaming big and then designing across a spectrum of change, from mild to magnificent.

In most cases, the process starts by documenting the existing conditions. Using the latest 3D camera technology, we can capture hundreds of views of an existing floor plan and stitch together a “doll-house” visual model. All key dimensions are then imported into CAD to create a baseline for new designs.

From there the architectural styles are incorporated into multiple schematic designs are developed in both Floor Plan and Elevation views. Computer modeling allows us to depict the design dimensionally to bring it visually to life. Sometimes a single design rises to the surface as the winner. Other times, a mash-up of several designs becomes the new hybrid solution. The selected architectural plan is vetted for feasibility and submitted to contractors for initial bids. When done efficiently, the Schematic Design process can take less than 8 weeks.

Whether it’s an antique Sea Captain’s home, or a conventional ranch, interior home transformations can have a huge impact on day-to-day living without noticeable change to the exterior. Of course, the exterior can be transformed as well, but we’ll save that for another blog!

The result is a better use of space, increased flow, improved views, more storage, less clutter, cleaner lines, and more environmentally friendly materials… Not to mention increased home value in a rising market!

No matter what type of house you live in, there’s a way to adapt the floor plan, wall position, entry ways, staircases and any other structural or non-structural component to improve your lifestyle.  Having an architectural strategy and an architectural plan are the keys to unlocking your home’s true potential.

Want to see the possibilities? We’d be happy to show you how our experienced Newburyport architects can take your home to the next level.

5 Smart-Money Reasons to Buy an HVAC Maintenance Contract

Caswell HVAC Maintenance Contract, Newburyport

Do you regularly change the oil in your car? More than likely you do, because a poorly serviced engine runs less efficiently and can create serious – and costly – problems down the road. Heating and cooling (HVAC) systems in the home work much the same way: Service them regularly and you’ll maintain efficiency and even spot small problems before they develop into expensive emergency repairs. Here are five time- and money-saving reasons why Caswell recommends that homeowners purchase an annual HVAC Maintenance Contract.

  1. An HVAC Maintenance Contract can’t eliminate all issues, but preventative maintenance can help detect a mechanical problem before it turns into an emergency situation. Pay a service fee up-front to avoid a much larger future repair bill.
  2. Annual maintenance enables our technicians to develop a long-range view of your HVAC service system. A service technician that is familiar with your system is far more likely to spot a small problem and fix it before it turns into a major malfunction.
  3. When your heating system breaks in the dead of winter, who do you call? More importantly, who calls you back? Caswell customers with an HVAC Maintenance Contract get top priority in cases of a heating or cooling system malfunction.
  4. Annual servicing helps prolong the health and efficiency of your HVAC system, and that means lower monthly energy bills for you – a significant cost savings over time.
  5. Typically customers with an HVAC Maintenance Contract get top priority with service scheduling. In fact, Caswell will contact you with a reminder to schedule your next maintenance appointment.

No one wants to pay higher energy bills and deal with emergency repairs. With an HVAC Maintenance Contract from Caswell Mechanical, it’s far less likely that you’ll have to.

Why Is It Important to Get a Fall Heating Tune-up?

Fall Heating Tune-Up - Lombardi Oil & Gas Newburyport

As autumn approaches, it’s important to start thinking about scheduling your heating tune-up. Most people remember their heater’s health only when the weather begins cooling down, but it can pay to plan ahead, especially if you can beat the winter rush in Massachusetts or New Hampshire for heater tune-up appointments.

Stay Warm in Your Home This Winter with a Heater Tune-up

Nobody wants their heater to go out during the colder months when technicians are the busiest and extra blankets on the beds just won’t cut it. Unfortunately, this scenario is all too common for homeowners who skip their yearly heating tune-up, and depending on what the problem is, it could take days to order necessary parts for a heater repair.

Catch Any Malfunction Before It Gets Worse – And Costlier

When it comes to a potential heating system repair, the earlier the problem can be identified and addressed, the simpler – and more cost-effective – the fix will be. A fall heating tune-up can catch minor problems before additional damage occurs. In fact, a routine inspection and tune-up can prevent some types of damage altogether by making sure the system is clean and works smoothly, ultimately extending the life of your furnace or boiler.

Keep Your Heating Costs Down This Season With a Heating Tune-up

A properly-tuned furnace works more efficiently, which helps keep energy costs down. Replacing the air filter, cleaning the condenser coils, and making sure the lubrication is adequate, for instance, allow the airflow to move with less obstruction, requiring less energy force.

Improve Air Quality for a Healthier Home

Heater components work best when they are clean and not worn. A heating tune-up in the fall means that your furnace or boiler’s performance – as well as the air quality in your home – will be at its finest, just as cold and virus season ramps up. Ensuring that your heater is properly filtering the air circulating in your home is especially important for households that suffer from asthma or allergies, since a dirty or clogged heater spreads dust, dander and other irritants around your home. If you have concerns about air quality in your home, view our tips to improve air quality in your home.

Safety Precautions Bring Peace of Mind

Not only can a dirty, rundown heater cost homeowners’ money and leave them cold, it can also be dangerous. House fires, carbon monoxide leaks, electrical issues, and other dangers can arise from an improperly maintained heating system.

Don’t forget to schedule a heating tune-up for your heater this fall with Lombardi Oil & Gas. Our courteous, friendly technicians with enhanced skills and knowledge training want to help your family stay safe and comfortable this coming season.

How to Compare Moving Companies – Moving Tips

Comparing Moving Companies, Moving Tips Newburyport

Moving is already a challenging task, so make your big day go as smoothly as possible and compare moving companies before selecting one. While cost is always an important factor, sometimes the “best deal” ends up with a u-haul pulling up on moving day, three hours late, with a rag tag crew handling your goods. Inastead, follow these simple moving tips to make sure you get the services you should not only expect, but deserve.

  • Moving Tip #1: A real moving company never minds coming out to do an onsite estimate, this will be one of your most important moving tips. Although some jobs are very easy to quote on the phone, you as the customer, deserve an onsite estimate if you desire it.
  • Moving Tip #2: Ask for certificates of insurance. One of the most important certificates is Workers’ Comp, a perfect example of why you should compare moving companies. Many companies who expect cash payment for services rendered do not have Workers’ Comp. If one of their workers get injured on the job, you could be on the hook.
  • Moving Tip #3: Always make sure the company has their own vehicles. The best way to do this is to check to see if they have a certificate proving an auto insurance policy. Ask the company to cc’ you an email with their insurance company who should be able to answer questions and provide you with the certificate.
  • Moving Tip #4: Make sure to sign a contract and put a deposit down for the services you are expecting on moving day. One of our top red flag moving tips, no contract means no commitment on your moving company’s part. Giving a deposit via check or credit card is your best assurance that you have chosen a company who is committed to getting your move done.
  • Moving Tip #5: Last but not least, one of the best ways to compare moving companies is to do a quick Google search with the owner’s name and the company name in the search bar. Check reviews to see how customers fared with the company, the good and the bad!

Follow these simple moving tips to compare moving companies and you’ll be home sweet home without the headaches on your next move!

If you’re planning an upcoming move please consider giving a call to Ferrick Bros. Moving Company, the earlier the better. We are able to provide our most competitive pricing when customers contact us early in the moving process.  We welcome the opportunity to give you peace of mind about your upcoming move and work very hard to ensure a very positive experience on moving day.

Full-Service Florist, Greenhouse & Garden Center

Nunan’s Florist & Greenhouses
Throughout the Years

Nunan’s Florist, Greenhouse & Garden Center is located at 269 Central Street in Georgetown, Massachusetts. Nunan’s is the North Shore’s premier floral designer for weddings and events.  We also provide exemplary residential and corporate landscaping services, and interior plantscaping design/implementation. Regularly, Nunan’s offers a variety of classes on floral design and hosts seasonal events throughout the year, which are open to the public.

Albert D. Nunan started Nunan Florist & Greenhouses as a florist shop in Saugus, Massachusetts in 1917.  Later, he relocated to Georgetown, Massachusetts. After a long and successful career, Albert passed the business down to his son Ken, who owned and managed Nunan’s for many years. In 1985, Ken was ready to retire and found two people who were eager to purchase the business.

Steve Flynn Sr. was born and raised in Middleton with 7 other siblings. During the summers and after school Steve and most of his siblings worked at Middleton Greenhouses located right down the street from their family home. During his high school years Steve knew he wanted to have a career in the agricultural world. A few years later, having a family of his own and pouring all his time into his work, Steve wanted a business of his own. Bill Guerrini was the grower there and a best friend to Steve who also lived in Middleton. Bill had the same passion for the agricultural world as Steve and spent most of his days on site taking care of all the crops. The two together decided that purchasing a place of their own was the best decision for them and their families. So, after meeting with Ken Nunan, a deal was made, a partnership was formed and an old business took on a new life.

Respectfully keeping Ken’s family name on the business, Steve and Bill grew Nunan’s into a larger and more diversified business. Over the last 30 years, Steve and Bill turned Nunan’s into what is today a full service florist, greenhouse & garden center while incorporating landscaping, plant rentals and interior plantscaping into the business. Bill is semi-retired now but comes in several times a month to help with all the crops in the greenhouses. Steve’s sister Maureen followed Steve and Bill from the beginning and is the Manager of the Garden Center area where you can find all your indoor plants. Steve’s sister Maryanne is the Office Manager, his wife Christine works in the office, his son Stephen Jr. now has the role of Owner/General Manager and his other son Brody is a full time employee. Stephen Jr.’s son Jordan, now 3rd generation, is working full time on the property. Steve Sr.’s 3 daughters, his other siblings as well as grandchildren, nieces and nephews are always eager to lend a helpful hand during the busy spring, the holidays, or any special events when needed.

Next Generation, New Ideas

Stephen Jr. resides in Georgetown right next to Nunan’s. He has 4 children and has followed in his father’s footsteps. You will always see him on the property 7 days a week. Growing up in the family business Stephen Jr. has learned a great deal about the business, the agricultural industry and the need to stay diversified due to the slow seasons. Today we see and hear about Agritourism which involves any agriculturally based operation that brings visitors to a farm, such as the corn mazes and pick-your-own pumpkins. Going with this thought and doing a lot of research, Stephen Jr. proposed the idea of adding a mini golf course to the business and calling it Nunan’s Garden Golf. How does a mini golf course relate you might ask? Well, Nunan’s mini golf course is a very well designed garden atmosphere with no structures such as dinosaurs and windmills. It is a peaceful walk through beautiful gardens as you enjoy your game of mini golf. They planted their own greenhouse grown crops of annuals, perennials as well as nursery stock they carry yearly in their nursery. Many of the unique material is labeled so if you come across something you like, just flip over your score card and write down the plants you like on the “plant wish list” so you can return at your convenience and find them in their nursery or plant area.

If you have an appreciation for exceptional design, top quality products and friendly attentive service, a visit to Nunan’s Florist, Greenhouse & Garden Center is a must.

Post-Pandemic: Make Your Home Brighter and Livelier

Post-pandemic, make your home brighter and livelier to improve your mental health and revive your desire to venture out into the world as a more peaceful, relaxed individual. Let us look at several ways to brighten your living space, preparing for your re-emergence into the world post-COVID-19:

Change up the scenery

One of the immediate things to enliven your space is to change one or more rooms.  For instance, if a room needs a fresh coat of paint, consider changing the color to one that more accurately affects the mood in that room/space. Paint colors have been shown to impact mood and mental health, choosing colors like blue, render relaxation while green is restorative. Brighter colors in living spaces reflect a jovial mood.

Spring or Summer cleaning

A deep clean after more than a year spent within the home may subconsciously affect one’s mental health. Deeply connecting to the physical nature of your living space for instance having  cluttered areas have been shown to negatively impact how people feel in both the long and the short term. Undertaking a deep cleaning project to clean out the cobwebs is a great way to relieve stress and improve your space simultaneously.

Invest in textiles

Window treatments! The subtle energy given off by having the right window treatments on your windows eludes an anxiety-free with more sunlight to brighten the mood and warm the interiors. Before you selecting fabrics/textiles; you may want to learn what are on  trend are for this year., Be it patterns, roller shades, or even blackout curtains, select textiles that resonate with the happy you!

Search for inspiration

Use the power of the internet to your advantage! Finding inspiration online is a great way to learn how to redecorate, learn more about current interior design trends, and how best to tackle certain parts of your home, like the outdoors. Seeing what others have done with their space can be inspirational.

For instance, putting your crafting skills to the test and reupholstering your furniture can be a great way to bring more color to an otherwise drab space. Reupholstering can be a great way to repurpose a well- made piece of furniture. Great idea for heirloom pieces. Most seasoned Interior Designers have workrooms to have your pieces refurbished. If you are DIYers search for “reupholstery near me,” you may discover numerous services for ways to spruce up your furniture. Prices will vary, depending on size, type of fabric, and any custom designs.

Home Staging & Redesign - Prepare Your Home for Sale

Get Top Price for Your Home with Minimal Investment

When preparing your home for sale, Relux Decor is the premier home staging company on the North Shore to provide you with services and tips to get top dollar. Whether you want basic advice on how to prepare your home for sale or more detailed help on projects to improve your value, Founder Ashley O’Shea and her expert team offer a wide variety of services to fit every homeowner’s needs.

While many homeowners may think that bringing in a home stager is only done for a massive home redesign, Ashley assures her clients this is not the case. Relux Decor is all about providing information. In many cases, the homeowner can spend little to no money making enhancements that will earn them a higher price in the end. The goal of Relux Decor’s home staging service is to create an emotional attachment for potential buyers. When preparing your home for sale, Ashley and her team work to make sure that everything from your listing pictures and beyond grab people’s attention and make your home stand out from the competition.

A consultation with Relux Decor begins with Ashley walking the space to identify areas that could use improvement. Clients receive a list of suggestions to help get the best price for their home. These can be as basic as decluttering to larger projects like interior styling and redesign. Ashley helps her clients prioritize their task lists and determine the most valuable investments to get their home ready for sale.

From there, Relux Design takes a non-pushy approach. Clients can opt to make home improvements themselves or work further with Relux Decor on an a la carte basis. Ashley can also connect her clients with the right vendors to get individual projects accomplished.

Relux Decor is flexible and always evolving. From paint consultations to continuing to work with homeowners post-purchase on redesigns, Ashley and her team are open to providing any service to help the realtor or client.

Ashley entered the world of home staging six years ago. Using skills from her previous career in visual merchandising for name brands like Crate and Barrel and Banana Republic, Ashley took on her first home staging project back in 2014—a condo in Charlestown. When this project was picked up by Boston Magazine, it was clear she had an eye for redesign. From there, her career took off, now frequently the first phone call for top real estate agents in the North Shore area when seeking home sale preparation assistance.

If you’re thinking about putting your house on the market, call Relux Decor to set up a consultation so you can feel confident your home will sell for the best possible price.

Why a Paint Consultation is Important Prior to Selling Your Home

Paint Consultation, Relux Decor, North Shore, MA, Color Consultation

Here at Relux Decor we assist with all aspects of home staging and Paint Consultations are our first recommendation when a client is getting ready to sell their home. Updating the interior and/or exterior paint selections of the home is worth the cost and often brings in up to 50% to 500% return on your investment depending on your real estate market. If you are thinking about selling your home, a color consultation is a great first step to get your property prepared.

What is a Paint Consultation? It’s an onsite meeting with one of our expert color consultants to assess the current color choices of the home. We make suggestions on which rooms need updating in order to have the greatest impact on potential home buyers. Paint consultations start at $150 for an in-home visit.

Why are Paint Consultations Important? Neutralizing a space is an efficient way to appeal to many audiences (in this case new home buyers). Neutral paint colors generally support all existing furniture colors, create a calming mood, and work well in any room. The right paint color will work with any style home as well, whether it be traditional, contemporary, minimalist, or coastal to name a few. However, oftentimes paint colors are not what they appear to be on the tiny little swatch you bring home from the paint store. Natural and artificial light, along with placement, have a huge impact on how the color looks in your space. Paint consultations can eliminate any mistakes and save you money on having to repaint, before you commit the wrong color to your walls.

What if I’m not moving? Paint consultations are not just for those who are relocating. Color trends change and over time paint can become chipped, dirty, or faded. If you need help narrowing down your choices, or attaining that magazine worthy look, Relux Decor can help. Call us today to schedule an appointment!

The Biggest Financial and Non-Financial Benefits of Owning A Home

In the midst of a global pandemic, our homes have become much more than a space that provides a roof over our heads. We’ve experienced sheltering in place for several months, so having a place we can call our own has become invaluable. For many, our homes have also turned into our workspaces and even schools for our children.

Moreover, a recent survey by Gallup just ranked real estate as the best long-term investment among several options—with 41 percent of Americans seeing it as superior to stocks, gold, savings accounts, and bonds.

But unlike other investment options where the benefits are purely financial, owning a home provides both financial, non-financial, and social advantages that allow every homeowner to take great pride in. As National Homeownership Month kicks off this June, we’ll cover some of those benefits that will hopefully make you more excited to kickstart your homeownership journey, or even celebrate if you already have a place to call your own.

Building equity

Home equity refers to the value of your property that “you truly own.” It is your property’s current market value minus the amounts owed on any mortgages or liens against the property. Owning a home builds equity because equity grows with each payment you make toward your mortgage, which brings you closer to owning more of your home. It’s opposed to making monthly payments to your landlord if you’re a renter, where you will own nothing no matter how long you stay there. Performing routine maintenance on your home and other renovations that help increase its resale value is also another way to build equity.

Your home equity is a form of forced savings that is essentially part of your net worth, which means you’re preparing for your future since you can use it down the road to help you accomplish other huge financial goals.

Helps build a strong credit history

A mortgage is considered “good debt” so as long as you’re consistently making your monthly loan payments on time, you are showing to other lenders that you are a good borrower. This helps to build your credit and proves your credit-worthiness, which can be helpful when you may want to consider other loans in the future, such as for buying a car, remodeling your home, or getting a business loan. It’s an additional perk that many buyers may not consider at first but will prove to be beneficial later on.

Better control and stability over housing-related costs

One of the most significant financial benefits of being a homeowner, and the biggest advantage versus being a renter, is that you will have better control over your monthly housing payments. Unlike rent costs that continue to go up each year, you’ll have peace of mind knowing that your monthly mortgage payments remain relatively steady despite rising interest rates and periods of inflation, especially if you have a fixed-rate mortgage where the cost of your home is locked in for the term of your loan.

Other costs of owning a home like property taxes and insurance premiums may fluctuate, but this doesn’t typically happen as often as rising rents. You can also choose to install energy-efficient appliances and features that can help save you thousands of dollars in utility bills every year. With this kind of control, you can budget accordingly and make better short- and long-term financial decisions.

Tax deductions

Another financial perk of being a homeowner is that you qualify for many tax deductions and tax credits. To make it clear, a tax deduction reduces your adjusted gross income, which in turn reduces your tax liability. Meanwhile, credits represent money taken off of your tax bill.

While we won’t elaborate on them further, the most common tax deductions for homeowners include:

  • Mortgage interest

  • Points

  • Real estate taxes

  • Private Mortgage Insurance (PMI)

  • Home office deduction

  • Medically-necessary home improvements

  • Capital gains tax exclusion

On the other hand, tax credits may be available for those who were issued a Mortgage Credit Certificate (MCC). You can also check if your state offers tax credits or rebates for energy efficient-improvements you’ve made to your home.

Increased privacy and security

In the 2020 National Housing Survey from Fannie Mae, one of the top three reasons Americans value homeownership is because it helps them achieve a sense of privacy and security. Unlike when living in an apartment where you often have to deal with thin walls and be able to hear almost every move of your neighbors, you are less likely to experience this when you own a home. You are also more likely to have the same neighbors for many years, increasing trust among the community. Moreover, privacy and security were proven to have become even more valuable as we’ve dealt with the challenges of the recent health crisis.

Freedom and control over your living space

Owning a home means you have a space that is uniquely yours. You have the freedom to customize it to your liking; accomplish renovations to make your home look exactly how you want it. In the National Housing Survey mentioned above, 91 percent of respondents said homeownership could help them achieve control over what they do with their living space.

Many renters have rules and limitations over the color they can paint the rooms or changes they can make to the appearance of their living spaces to make it feel like home, or even against having pets. But when you own, you’re free to create the space you want and renovate how you see fit (but still within the boundaries of your homeowner’s association and local zoning rules). It’s a liberating feeling that can never be taken for granted, especially if you’ve been a long-time renter first before finally owning your space.

Increased civic participation

Unlike their renter counterparts, homeowners often settle in their area for longer periods and don’t have to worry about moving anytime soon. This in turn adds a certain degree of stability to the neighborhood. With their stronger connection to their community, homeowners are often more committed to volunteer work. They are likely to contribute to the maintenance of their properties and surrounding areas. They are also more likely to get involved in community organizations and build relationships with other people in their neighborhood, potentially leading to an overall increase in civic participation.

Pride of ownership

The feeling of accomplishment and the sense of pride that comes along with homeownership is something that can never be underestimated. In the Fannie Mae survey, 87 percent of consumers believe owning a home is important to “living the good life.” Having a place where you can settle and raise your family, make memories, celebrate holidays and other special occasions, and spend time with family and friends is an important milestone that contributes to your overall health and well-being, which ultimately leads to a better quality of life. This sense of stability and life satisfaction is the reason why homeownership continues to represent the American dream for thousands of families each year.
