Figtree Kitchen: Small-Batch Delicious Treats Crafted With the Finest Ingredients
Figtree Kitchen in downtown Newburyport is known for their carefully crafted small-batch baked goods made with only the finest sourced ingredients. Founders Chef Michael Shea and Brian Murphy originally began their business in 2008 because of a mutual love of well-prepared, delicious food. They started out owning a small café and offering their baked goods at area farmers’ markets. It was at one such farmers’ market, in Newburyport, that they met Katie Habib. A well-known chef and owner of a local catering business, she was looking for a new challenge. A shared love of the Newburyport community as well as a love for baking made these three realize that it was the perfect time to open a storefront. In 2017, Figtree Kitchen opened its doors on Liberty Street with Katie at the helm.
At Figtree, you can see where the magic happens as bakers are busily creating and preparing right in front of you. There is a small, window-lined seating area where you can meet a friend for a cup of coffee or tea and get a yummy baked good or just grab a breakfast wrap on your way to work. In-house baker extraordinaire, Joe, loves what he does, and it shows in the unique offerings in the display case. He is always coming up with new ideas and flavors. Products here are baked using only the finest of ingredients and are prepared small-batch which allows for the ability to change menu offerings and reduces waste. Figtree Kitchen proudly supports numerous local organizations by donating unsold products to first responders, food pantries and senior centers.
Figtree Kitchen signature items include Wee Tarts, (think quiche only better and deliciously re-imagined), Baby Cakes, (that serve 2) and dinosaur shaped cinnamon donuts. These cute and buttery “Dino Donuts” were originally created to please the kids (and kids at heart) at the farmers’ markets and now have quite the following! Other specialties include scones that are available in sweet as well as savory options. Figtree also offers an impressive selection of wheat-free menu items and there is always a vegan muffin available.
Looking to celebrate a special occasion or having an event? Cakes, cupcakes and other treats, including wheat-free and vegan items, can be pre-ordered for pick up at the shop with advance notice. On-line ordering is made available at holiday time to ensure your gathering has just the perfect selection on the table to delight friends and family. No matter the day or season, you can be assured that the dedicated Figtree staff will provide you with a carefully crafted treat that you will not soon forget. Next time you are in Market Square, you are just steps away from this little shop with a big heart. Pop in and see what’s baking! Article written by Newburyport.com Correspondent, Jenny Davis.
